This approach has been used to characterize opioid abuse ( Gushgari et al., 2019 ), to facilitate polio eradication ( Hovi et al., 2012 ), and as an ‘early warning’ signal for the spread of viral gastroenteritis ( Hellmér et al., 2014 ).
