Long‐term tooth retention in chronic periodontitis – results after 18 years of a conservative periodontal treatment regimen in a university setting

Abstract: The risk of tooth loss was generally low under the provided non-regenerative treatment regimen; a minority of patients were responsible for the majority of teeth lost during SPT.

“…In line with previous findings, tooth loss in AgP is not higher, but similar or possibly even lower than in CP as long as a systematic active and supportive therapy is established (Graetz et al., ). Moreover, tooth loss per year does not seem to be accelerated with time (as could be expected given the escalating loss of attachment), but rather constant (as can be seen in the Kaplan–Meier plots).…”

“…The identified factors and the magnitude of their association with tooth loss are similar to those identified by previous studies on AgP (over shorter observation periods) (Bäumer, El Sayed et al., ; Bäumer, Pretzl et al.,) and CP (Carnevale, Cairo, & Tonetti, ; Chambrone & Chambrone, ; Costa et al., ; Eickholz, Kaltschmitt, Berbig, Reitmeir, & Pretzl, ; Faggion, Petersilka, Lange, Gerss, & Flemmig, ; Graetz et al., ; Martinez‐Canut, ; Ng, Ong, Lim, Koh, & Chan, ; Pretzl, Kaltschmitt, Kim, Reitmeir, & Eickholz, ; Seirafi, Ebrahimi, Golkari, Khosropanah, & Soolari, ). Assessing these factors should thus be done for all periodontitis patients regardless of the diagnosis, especially as such an assessment is relatively easy (both clinical and radiographic measures are readily available).…”

“…More recent studies documented mortality between 0.05 and 0.1 t/y as a common endpoint. When only flap for reattachment was used, the documented tooth loss during supportive therapy was 0.1 t/y over 18 years (Graetz et al, ). A loss of 0.08 t/y was reported over 10 years (Muzzi et al, ), and an overall rate of loss of 0.06 t/y was noted in seven years (Nibali et al, ).…”
