Ionic liquids (ILs) are the safest solvent in various high-temperature applications due to their non-flammable properties. In order to obtain their thermal stability properties, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is extensively used to analyze the kinetics of the thermal decomposition process. This review summarizes the different kinetics analysis methods and finds the isoconversional methods are superior to the Arrhenius methods in calculating the activation energy, and two tools—the compensation effect and master plots—are suggested for the calculation of the pre-exponential factor. With both parameters, the maximum operating temperature (MOT) can be calculated to predict the thermal stability in long-term runnings. The collection of thermal stability data of ILs with divergent cations and anions shows the structure of cations such as alkyl side chains, functional groups, and alkyl substituents will affect the thermal stability, but their influence is less than that of anions. To develop ILs with superior thermal stability, dicationic ILs (DILs) are recommended, and typically, [C4(MIM)2][NTf2]2 has a decomposition temperature as high as 468.1 °C. For the convenience of application, thermal stability on the decomposition temperature and thermal decomposition activation energy of 130 ILs are summarized at the end of this manuscript.

Encapsulated ionic liquids (ENILs) based on carbonaceous submicrocapsuleswere designed, synthesized and applied to the sorption of NH 3 from gas stream. The ENILs were prepared using three different task-specific ILs with adequate properties for NH 3 capture: 1-2(-hydroxyethyl)-3-methylimadazolium tetrafluoroborate (EtOHmimBF 4 ), choline bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (CholineNTf 2 ) and tris(2hydroxyethyl)-methylammoniummethylsulfate [(EtOH) 3 MeNMeSO 4 ]. The ENILs synthesized were analyzed by different techniques to assess their morphology, chemical composition, porous structure and thermal stability. The capture of NH 3 was tested in fixed-bed experiments under atmospheric pressure. The influence of the type and load of IL, temperature (30, 45 and 60 ºC) and NH 3 inlet concentration was analyzed.Desorption of NH 3 from the exhausted ENILs was also studied at atmospheric pressure and temperatures in the range of 150 to 200 ºC. The ENILs prepared with task-specific ILs were found to be suitable for NH 3 capture in the fixed-bed operation. These systems can be a promising alternative to conventional absorption or adsorption due to: i) high sorption capacity controlled by IL selection, ii) remarkable mass transfer rate, iii) low 2 sensitiveness to high temperatures of the gas stream, iv) fast and complete regeneration of the exhausted ENIL at mild conditions; and v) recovery of NH 3 .

Despite possessing an interesting chemical nature and tuneable physicochemical properties, ionic liquids (ILs) must have their ecotoxicity tested in order to be commercialized. The water solubility of ILs allows their easy access to the aquatic compartment of the ecosystem creating a potential hazard to aquatic organisms. Hence, it is relevant to design ionic liquids with lower toxicity while keeping the desired properties of interest. Considering the possibility of an enormous number of combinations of different cations and anions, a rational guidance for the structural design of ionic liquids is essential in order to prioritize the synthesis as well as testing of selected molecules only. Predictive in silico models, such as quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models, can play a pivotal role in exploring the important chemical attributes contributing to the response activity. These models may then lead to the design of novel ionic liquids. The present study aims at developing predictive QSAR models for the ecotoxicity of ionic liquids using the bacteria Vibrio fischeri as an indicator response species. Instead of a single model, here we have used multiple models to capture more complete structural information of ionic liquids for toxicity towards Vibrio fischeri. The derived chemical attributes have been implemented in designing new analogues, some of which have been synthesized and had their ecotoxicity tested for the same model organism. The predictive QSAR models reported here can be used for ecotoxicity prediction of new IL chemicals and for data-gap filling. Moreover, the synthesized low-toxic ILs could be considered for evaluation as well as for application in suitable processes serving the purpose of industry and academia.
