“…6 By comparison, Meij-de Vries et al recently analyzed testicular volumes in adults, after prepubertal ORP for acquired UDT, at the Medical Center Alkmaar between 1986 and 1999, and consistently found smaller volumes on ultrasound using the same formula. 4 Since the late 1990s, prepubertal surgical intervention has been actively withheld at that institution in boys with acquired UDT. Nevertheless, the same outcome was observed in the present study in a younger cohort at Juliana Children's Hospital.…”

“…For young adults (30 patients, 38 testes) operated testis volume ranged from 2.4 to 19.0 ml (mean Ϯ SD 8.1 Ϯ 3.7), which was less than the normal values reported in the literature (13.4 ml, p Ͻ0.001). 4,9,10 Of all operated cases mean Ϯ SD volume was 4.1 Ϯ 3.8 ml in left testes and 3.4 Ϯ 3.7 ml in right testes (p ϭ 0.194). Mean Ϯ SD volume of 129 unilateral testes fixed by orchiopexy was 3.4 Ϯ 3.3 ml, which was less than their counterparts (4.6 Ϯ 4.6, p ϭ 0.01).…”

“…As a result, at follow-up these men were older than those operated at the Juliana Children's Hospital. Both cohorts have been described in detail in earlier publications (Meij-de Vries et al, 2012;van der Plas et al, 2013a). A UDT was defined as a testis which could not be manipulated into a stable scrotal position in its most caudal location and further traction on cord structures was painful.…”

“…Some endocrinology textbooks advocate the use of a cut-off point of 25 mm in testicular length (11,12). There are few cross-sectional studies on long-term testicular growth among boys with congenital and acquired cryptorchidism (13)(14)(15)(16) and only one longitudinal study on testicular growth in boys with congenital cryptorchidism during early childhood (17)(18)(19). However, to our knowledge, there are no published prospective longitudinal studies on testicular growth during pubertal transition among boys with a history of congenital cryptorchidism.…”
