Long-term survival and plasmid maintenance of Escherichia coli in marine microcosms

Abstract: The survival pattern and plasmid maintenance of Escherichia coli was examined in an artificial seawater microcosm. It was found that the three strains of E. coli (EK3C, H10407 and 34309) included in the study were able to maintain a portion of cells in the culturable phase for at least 3 years in artificial seawater. Along with retaining culturability, that portion of the cell population also maintained their indigenous plasmids over the 3‐year period. It is concluded that cells of E. coli maintaining culturab… Show more

“…Yet, bacteria can maintain plasmids that have no evident benefit despite the costs [2,[18][19][20][21]. Plasmids can spread horizontally at sufficiently high rates to explain this seemingly paradox [22].…”

“…Horizontal gene transfer should be considered in risk assessment, when genetically modified micro‐organisms (GMM) are released into the environment, either intentionally or accidentally. Escherichia coli , one of the most widely used bacteria for the synthesis of recombinant products, may survive longer than expected in river water [1], or sea water [2, 3]. It has recently been shown to establish itself in biofilms [4, 5].…”
