Long-term survival after resection of sarcomatoid carcinoma of the pancreas: an updated experience

Abstract: Background Sarcomatoid carcinoma of the pancreas (SCP) is a rare histologic subtype of undifferentiated pancreatic carcinoma. Historically, this has been associated with a worse overall prognosis than adenocarcinoma. However, the clinical course and surgical outcomes of SCP remain poorly characterized owing to its rarity. Methods A single-institution, prospectively maintained database was queried for patients who underwent pancreatic resection with a final diagnosis of SCP. We describe their histology, clini… Show more

“…UCP is a subtype of PDAC representing a set of rare tumors that accounts for as many as 5% of all pancreatic malignancies[ 11 ]. UPC is categorized into two different types: undifferentiated carcinoma [with three variants: anaplastic undifferentiated carcinoma, sarcomatoid carcinoma (SCP), and carcinosarcoma] and undifferentiated carcinoma with osteoclast-like giant cells[ 5 , 12 ]. Hence, we present a case of SCP that is an extremely rare type of tumor, with only a few cases reported in the literature[ 5 , 9 , 10 , 13 - 21 , 31 - 36 ]…”
