“…This method was previously used in order to study the lifetime of superoxide anions in the absence of Li + , concluding that superoxide anions are long lived in some electrolytes such as dimethylsulfoxide, 30 glymes 13 and pyrrolidinium based ionic liquids. 19 In this work we have observed that superoxide anions are also stable in solutions with high concentration of Li + , for superoxide concentrations < 1 mM. Figure 2 shows that the absorption band of superoxide in a 0.1 mM KO2 solution with 300 mM of LiTFSI decreases by less than 1% after 3 hours.…”

“…11 Intensive research has been done on finding alternative electrolytes and electrode materials that are resistant towards degradation by superoxide. A few solvents like dimethyl sulfoxide 12 , some glymes 13,14 and pyrrolidinium or piperidinium based ionic liquids [15][16][17][18][19] have been identified as promising electrolyte choices. Gold 12 and TiC 20 electrodes have shown much better capacity performance than carbon, in terms of cycling stability and suppression of side reactions.…”

“…The pH of ILs was measured using pH strips from Merck. A very small quantity of KO 2 was added to the acidic IL until its pH became 7 [25,26,36]. AlNashef et al reported that O 2 À was not stable in some ILs because of the acidity of these ILs [37].…”

“…Furthermore, long-term monitoring of the O2 − concentration allows the reaction kinetics to be studied. Several studies have reported the long-term stability of O2 − with ILs (AlNashef et al, 2010;Hayyan et al, 2012d;Hayyan et al, 2012f) and other electrolytes, such as glyme (Schwenke et al, 2013). Recently, Schwenke et al (2015) monitored O2 − with 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide for 18 h.…”

“…Hence, they have been used to desulfurize fuels by various methods, including extraction (Ferreira et al, 2014;Lu et al, 2014) and oxidative desulfurization (Jiang et al, 2014;Lü et al, 2014). Recently, our group reported the possibility of using O2 − generated in ILs to destroy chlorinated hydrocarbons and sulfur compounds (Hayyan et al, 2012f;Hayyan et al, 2012e;Hayyan et al, 2015b;Hayyan et al, 2016b;AlNashef et al, 2013). Therefore, it also was worthwhile to explore using O2 − to destroy sulfur compounds in one of the studied ILs.…”
