Long-Term Soft Denture Lining Materials

Abstract: Long-term soft denture lining (LTSDL) materials are used to alleviate the trauma associated with wearing complete dentures. Despite their established clinical efficacy, the use of LTSDLs has been limited due to the unfavorable effects of the oral environment on some of their mechanical and performance characteristics. The unresolved issue of LTSDL colonization by Candida albicans is particularly problematic. Silicone-based LTSDL (SLTSDL) materials, which are characterized by more stable hardness, sorption and … Show more

“…This properties are related with changes in the hardness, bond strength, discoloration, odour, and easier bacterial adhesion to the surface a can be different [19,21]. The silicones are well known prosthetic materials characterized by low sorption and solubility values [5] and it corresponds very well with presented results. Additionally the obtained values are similar to those for other materials available on the market [14,22,23].…”

“…The water sorption and solubility of soft lining materials are generally dependent on the hydrophilicity of the matrix and on the leachable components [5]. This properties are related with changes in the hardness, bond strength, discoloration, odour, and easier bacterial adhesion to the surface a can be different [19,21].…”

“…Despite the strong desire of the patients to obtain well-fitting dentures, as well as, clinician's efforts to fabricate satisfactory dentures, there are still edentulous patients who are suffering during eating while wearing their conventional complete dentures. One of the most important reasons for this problem is atrophic and thin mucosa that bears the stress caused by occlusal forces [2][3][4][5][6][7]14 . Therefore, resilient denture liners are used for those patients who are unable to tolerate the pressures transmitted by prosthesis to the thin and relatively non-resilient mucosa 6 .…”
