Long-term results of Essed–Schroeder plication by the use of non-absorbable Goretex™ sutures for correcting congenital penile curvature

Abstract: This study evaluated the long-term outcome of the Essed -Schroeder procedure for correcting congenital penile curvature using non-absorbable Goretex 2 sutures. The Essed -Schroeder procedure was performed in 35 patients with congenital ventral penile curvature (minimum 30). Follow-up included a standardized interview with measurement of angulation. Twenty-three of 35 patients were available for complete long-term follow-up (average 34.3 months). The mean preoperative ventral curvature was 54. In 17=23 patients… Show more

“…The present results show excellent low recurrence rates for CPD using six sutures (either polypropylene or Goretex 3/0) and using the inverted suture technique [5,17]. The penis was shorter in 74% of the present patients, similar to the rate in other studies, as penile shortening is a technique-related side-effect which must be explained to the patient before surgery [12]. Chien and Aboseif [18] reported promising results of a longitudinal corporeal plication technique.…”

“…However, this technique is accompanied by a high incidence of recurrent curvature and discomfort/pain caused by the nonabsorbable sutures. 3,4 In 1997, to reduce the incidence of recurrent penile curvature, Rehman et al 5 introduced a modification of the plication technique by partially shaving an ellipse of tunica albuginea.…”
