Long-Term Results and Complications Following Adjustable Gastric Banding

Abstract: This study was performed to assess our long-term results with laparoscopic gastric banding in patients with an observation period of at least 9 years calculated from the date of operation. Between January 1996 and December 2000, a total of 276 patients (83% female) underwent laparoscopic gastric banding at our institution. Mean preoperative body mass index (BMI) was 44 +/- 6 kg/m(2). BMI after 1, 5, 7, 9, and 10 years was 33 +/- 6, 30 +/- 6, 31 +/- 6, 32 +/- 7, and 31 +/- 7 kg/m(2), respectively. Mean excess w… Show more

“…Concluded that the band is safe and effective treatment. However, due to complications as infection, migration, escape, slip, intolerance band and esophageal dilations, requiring reoperations and failure, leads to the conclusion that the band should be performed only in selected cases 9. Lanthaler et al 7 studied 276 patients, most women on nine years after operation. Reoperation was 52.9% due to some complication 8. Their results were satisfactory in the category of weight loss in patients who still kept the band.…”

“…Furthermore, the existing literature is primarily quantitative in nature, using validated measures to determine changes such as quality of life [24,25], eating behaviour [26,27], improvement in comorbidities [16,28], and long-term weight loss [10]. Complications following surgery such band slippage, oesophageal dilatation and pouch dilatation have also been explored [29,30]. Data indicates individuals experiencing nausea and vomiting following LAGB have significantly lower weight loss compared to individuals who do not have this complication [31].…”
