Long-term results after implantation of McKee-Farrar total hip prostheses

Abstract: From 1973 to 1976, McKee-Farrar total hip arthroplasties were performed in the Orthopaedics Department at the Centre of Pulmology. In the present study, only patients with a complete record of radiological changes at the bone/implant or bone/cement interface were evaluated. A series of 81 patients with 100 total hip prostheses in situ according to the Mayo Clinic hip score and 36 patients who had undergone 36 revision operations were studied. The design of the metal cup with metal studs at the outer surface ha… Show more

“…Metalto-metal implants have less wear than metal-topolyethylene implants, and earlier results have been optimistic regarding wear and long-term results. However, aseptic loosening still occurs (August et al 1986, Visuri 1987, Jantsch et al 1991, Jacobsson et al 1996, Schmalzried et al 1996. Metal-to-metal implants are highly durable against wear, and newer designs may give better long-term results than old ones (McKellop et al 1996, Willert et al 1996, Higuchi et al 1997.…”

“…The study was a prospective evaluation of results of the CFP THR in an attempt to replicate published data. The senior author had reservations over the introduction of hip-resurfacing replacements, with primary concerns surrounding the unevaluated risk of femoral-neck fracture, along with other concerns in view of the failures of MoM implants historically [10,11]. These opinions have now gained considerable traction [3,12].…”
