Long-term results after artificial iris implantation in patients with aniridia

Abstract: The artificial iris prosthesis revealed a good clinical outcome in terms of long-term stability, cosmetic appearance, visual function, and represents a good functional iris diaphragm for compartmentalisation. Complications such as glaucoma, darkening of iris tissue, and need for consecutive anterior segment surgery are clearly associated with implants with integrated fiber mesh, but not to those without. Hence, the use of full iris prostheses without embedded fiber mesh, even in cases with remnant iris, and th… Show more

“…Conformité Européenne approved use of Artificial Iris in 2011, and it is currently undergoing the US Food and Drug Administration approval process in the United States. [ 16 ] The implantation of the Artificial Iris , particularly after iris-fixated IOL implantation with probable postoperative complications, such as intraocular inflammation, glaucoma, [ 21 ] corneal edema, and endothelial cell loss, [ 22 ] in traumatic cases, might provoke a lack of enthusiasm for these surgical procedures. Contradictory reports exist regarding certain cosmetic types [ 23 ] of anterior-chamber Artificial Iris implantation in phakic eyes.…”

“…As far as treatment options for ocular diseases are concerned in aniridia, implantation of artificial iris implants or colored iris diaphragm intraocular lens following cataract surgery improve postoperative outcomes by reducing glare disability and improving visual acuity [5,6]. Spectrums of corneal diseases are treated with artificial tears and autologus serum drops to limbal stem cell transplantation with or without sequential keratoplasty [7].…”
