Long-Term Response of Piles to Cyclic Lateral Loading Following Vibratory and Impact Driving in Water-Saturated Sand

Abstract: The influence of the pile installation by vibratory or impact driving on the response to subsequent cyclic lateral loading, as faced in the offshore environment, is investigated numerically. Largedeformation analyses of the pile installation process using the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian method considering partially drained conditions are performed. Following the installation, one million lateral load cycles are simulated using the high-cycle accumulation (HCA) model. The lower the hydraulic conductivity of the… Show more

“…The field test comprised two phases: pile driving and pile extraction. During pile driving, the applied force consisted of the exciting force and the combined weight of the vibrator and the pile, as shown in Equation (1). For pile extraction, the applied force included the exciting force and the pull force, as shown in Equation (2).…”

“…Vibratory pile driving is an increasingly popular foundation method. In comparison to jacking and impact driving methods, vibratory driving offers higher drivability, faster penetration rates, reduced noise levels, and reduced risk of pile damage [1][2][3]. Variable vibratory drivers allow for adaptability to various site-specific conditions.…”

“…(3) In the management phase, strengthen monitoring of the surrounding environment and minimize potential environmental hazards that may arise during construction. In addition, a combination of pile driving methods is recommended, specifically employing impact driving in the final phase of the vibratory driving process to increase pile base resistance and resist deformation accumulation in vibratory-driven piles due to cyclic lateral loading [37].…”

“…A frequently adopted numerical scheme is the Coupled-Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) method [1,2,3], which is available in the commercial software Abaqus. Originally developed for solid-fluid interactions, it is now also used in geotechnics, modelling the soil by Eulerian finite elements.…”
