Long-Term Prognosis of Patients With Takotsubo Syndrome

Abstract: Overall, TTS patients had long-term outcomes comparable to age- and sex-matched ACS patients. Also, we demonstrated that TTS can either be benign or a life-threating condition depending on the inciting stress factor. We propose a new classification based on triggers, which can serve as a clinical tool to predict short- and long-term outcomes of TTS. (International Takotsubo Registry [InterTAK Registry]; NCT01947621).

“…Clinical symptoms and signs at presentation, along with electrocardiographic (ECG) and laboratory changes, may mimic acute coronary syndrome (ACS) or acute heart failure . Although TTS has long been considered a benign condition, recent studies reported that it can be associated with significant adverse events both during hospitalization and after discharge . Therefore, there is a compelling need for an optimal preventive therapy to reduce the incidence of adverse events following TTS.…”

“…3 Secondary TS had a worse outcomes in the InterTAK registry. 12 Acute prognosis is also worse than initially believed, 13 with in-hospital rates of death and shock being similar to age-and sex-matched ACS patients. RV involvement occurs in 20%.…”
