Long-Term Prognosis of Conservatively Treated Acute Knee Ligament Injuries in Competitive and Spare Time Sportsmen

Abstract: During the period 1975-1981, 221 persons were treated conservatively at Tampere University Central Hospital for an acute knee ligament injury. A total of 194 patients (88%) were reexamined 8 +/- 3 years after the injury. In the clinical and radiological results, there were no significant differences between competitive, spare time and non-sportsmen. However, the subjective and functional results were significantly better in competitive sportsmen than in the others. It was concluded that the amount of static kn… Show more

“…The hamstring to quadriceps ratio (H/Q ratio) in our subjects was 0.53 at baseline and 0.67 following training. According Kannus et al ., 32 healthy individuals have a hamstring to quadriceps ratio of 0.50 Á/0.60 and therefore our subjects were within the normal range. Assessment and tracking of the H:Q may be valuable in the clinical setting because a coupling of weak hamstring muscles with strong quadriceps may interrupt the optimal derotation of the pelvis and may contribute to low back pain and injuries.…”

“…The Lachman test has proven to be the most reliable clinical test of anterior tibial subluxation [18,27,54]. The reported accuracy of the clinical examination to detect an ACL disruption varies from 7% [42] to 87% [27].…”

The reported accuracy of the clinical examination to detect an ACL disruption varies from 7% [42] to 87% [27]. In the patient with a chronic ACL disruption, the pivot shift has been proven to be a reliable test to detect an ACL disruption [1,16,17].…”

“…Die Folge ist meist eine a.-p. und Rotationsinstabilität, welche im Verlauf zu Meniskusläsionen, Knorpelschäden und schließlich zur Arthrose führt [8]. Durch eine vordere Kreuzbandersatzplastik können diese Instabilität behoben und die sportliche Aktivität der Patienten z. T. wieder hergestellt werden.…”
