Long‐term plasma levels of leptin and adiponectin in Rett syndrome

Abstract: Since all patients were not obese, we might hypothesize that in Rett syndrome leptin and adiponectin might participate to clinical manifestations other than weight balance.

“…This suggests that adipokines in Rett syndrome may be differentially regulated. Blardi et al [15] repeated their experiments including autistic patients besides Rett patients, but they did not find significant differences in adiponectin levels in spite of increased leptin levels in patients with ASD. …”

“…This phenotype suggests a classical leptin-resistant state, as would be encountered in the presence of elevated PTP1B, consistent with a role for the phosphatase in contributing to RTT pathogenesis. Interestingly, plasma levels of leptin have also been shown to be markedly elevated in patients with RTT (47,48), which is one of the hallmarks of leptin resistance that is observed in metabolic disorders. However not all patients with elevated leptin levels were obese, which suggests that leptin accumulation in patients with RTT could be related to factors other than weight control and adiposity and that correcting circulating levels of leptin could have a beneficial effect on other aspects of RTT.…”

“…Blardi et al [ 3 ] measured leptin − a peptide hormone that is proportional to body fat − over a period of 2 years in normal weight girls with RS and normal weight controls. Across the measurement period the leptin levels of the girls with RS were signifi cantly higher than those of the controls, and showed a signifi cant increase over the 2-year measurement period.…”
