“…Van der Meer et al. (2017, 2022) constructed a global low‐frequency eustatic sea‐level curve for the last 835 Myr using Phanerozoic‐Neoproterozoic marine fossil record of 87 Sr/ 86 Sr isotope ratios. The data were obtained from biogenic and abiogenic marine carbonates to represent the pristine paleo‐seawater ratio.…”

“…Sea-level fluctuations not only affect the paleobathymetry but they load a basin during a rise and unload it during a fall (Ali et al, 2018;Watts & Steckler, 1979). In the past, various approaches have been used to quantify sea-level fluctuations, including sequence stratigraphy, plate tectonic modeling, and chemical isotope analysis (e.g., Carter, 1998;Haq & Al-Qahtani, 2005;Müller et al, 2008;van der Meer et al, 2022). Among the many published sea-level curves, we selected the curves of Haq and Al-Qahtani (2005), Haq et al (1987), Haq (2014Haq ( , 2017Haq ( , 2018, Haq et al (1988), Haq and Schutter (2008), Vérard et al (2015), van der Meer et al (2017van der Meer et al ( , 2022, and Marcilly et al (2022).…”

“…Here we analysed the compilation of subsidence data of Xie and Heller (2009) to determine typical subsidence rates for passive margins and intracratonic basins. From this analysis, it is possible to convert the Cretaceous eustatic signals of Haq (2014), Sahagian et al (1996), Miller et al (2004 and van der Meer et al (2022), into accommodation curves using different subsidence 'scenarios' and hence assesses their plausibility using the results of the forward stratigraphic models.…”

“…In contrast to the work of Sahagian et al (1996) and Miller et al (2004), the curves of Haq (2014) and van der Meer et al (2022) were generated from a global synthesis and suffer from different challenges. In both scenarios, the Haq (2014) curve is dominated by TST and FSST with only a small per cent of time characterised by stillstand and normal, sediment-driven progradation.…”
