The western flank of the UAE‐Oman mountain range offers a unique geodynamic setting to study the development of a cratonic rift into a mature passive margin and its subsequent flexure under orogenic load. However, the geodynamic processes driving this evolution are not fully understood. In this study, seismic and biostratigraphic data from 283 exploration wells were utilized to assess the regional subsidence and uplift history of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and neighboring areas of the western flank of the UAE‐Oman mountain range. Three major sequences have been identified: pre‐Permian, Permian‐Turonian rifted margin, and Coniacian‐Pleistocene active margin. Backstripping of biostratigraphic data reveals Early Permian (ca. 272 Ma) and Late Jurassic (ca. 160) rift phases, that have been linked to Gondwana's early and final fragmentation. A NE‐SW‐oriented basin in central UAE suggests a Jurassic intracratonic rift that has been influenced by pre‐existing structures. Compressional phases were identified during the Late Cretaceous and in the Oligocene‐Miocene, Compressional phases were identified during the Late Cretaceous and in the Oligocene‐Miocene, coinciding with the emplacement of the Semail ophiolite and the Arabian‐Eurasian plates collision, respectively. These events caused additional subsidence and flank uplift, forming the Aruma foreland basin in the east and the Pabdeh foreland basin in the eastern and northern UAE. Crustal thickness following the rift episodes ranges from 30 to 36 km, considering a sedimentary cover thickness of 11‐14 km. These estimates are in accord with Moho depths derived from teleseismic receiver functions and gravity inversion. These findings can be used to better understand Gondwana fragmentation and the opening and closing of the Neo‐Tethys Ocean.

The isolation of the eustatic signal from the sedimentary record is a challenging task, and accordingly, there is no consensus on the magnitude and pace (rate) of eustatic events in the geological record. Here we critically assess various published short‐term Cretaceous eustatic curves using insights from forward stratigraphic modelling. We generate a range of simulations with varying eustatic rates and sediment supply against a background of constant subsidence. From these, we generate statistics on the accommodation change associated with the various systems tracts for different sediment supply. We quantify the minimum rate needed to generate transgressive systems tracts (TST). Using this threshold and average subsidence rates for passive margins and intracratonic basins, we document some key challenges with a range of Cretaceous eustatic curves. While it is possible to complexify, this approach through the inclusion of other parameters, our results provide a framework for evaluating eustatic (or relative sea level) curves in terms of the implied rate of change of accommodation. Given these caveats, we also show that many estimates of the magnitude of short‐term transgressions are of insufficient rate to generate observable TST. Further, our work places an upper limit on the time frame over which aquifer and thermo‐eustasy can have observable impacts on the rock record, providing support for the action of glacio‐eustasy during the Cretaceous.

Endemic evolution of Tethyan‐derived belemnites in North‐East Greenland: the middle Barremian Duvalia Event

Marine sequences on Wollaston Forland, North‐East Greenland have provided rich belemnite assemblages of Barremian (Early Cretaceous) age. Most common are belemnites of Boreal affinities, closely related to northwest European faunas. Remarkable are the findings of 47 rostra of Duvalia, a genus of Tethyan origin. In addition to Duvalia grasiana, Duvalia arctica sp. nov., Duvalia aff. silesiaca and Duvalia sp. have been recognized. Duvalia grasiana is well known from the Barremian–Aptian of the western Tethys. The other three taxa differ, however, morphologically from contemporaneous Duvalia species common in the Barremian of the Tethys. Our findings suggest a migration of D. grasiana to North‐East Greenland in the early Barremian and a subsequent in situ evolution of D. arctica in the Greenland Norwegian Seaway. Duvalia aff. silesiaca, second in abundance, most probably also evolved from a Tethyan precursor species (Duvalia silesiaca). The taxonomic affinities of Duvalia sp. remain unclear. Duvalia arctica, D. aff. silesiaca and Duvalia sp. are all characterized by small size, indicating an endemic evolution and adaptation to a well‐confined position in the food chain. The niche occupied by these small‐sized Duvalia species must have differed substantially to that occupied by co‐occurring Boreal belemnites, which have robust, stout rostra. The findings make North‐East Greenland part of a migration route from the Tethys via the north Atlantic to the high Boreal. The Duvalia Event corresponds stratigraphically to the middle Barremian warming.
