Long-Term Outcomes of Vibroplasty Coupler Implantations to Treat Mixed/Conductive Hearing Loss

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the long-term safety and performance of four different vibroplasty couplers (round window, oval window, CliP and Bell coupler) in combination with an active middle ear implant. Methods: This was a multicentre, prospective, long-term study including 5 German hospitals. Thirty adult subjects suffering from conductive or mixed hearing loss were initially enrolled for the study, 24 of these were included in the final analysis with up to 36 months of postsurgical follow-up data. Bone conducti… Show more

“…Previous reports have analyzed the safety of the VSB, 6,7,17 we have further supported its safety by comparing pre- and postoperative BC thresholds, which was in line with previous reports in the literature. For patients with CAA, Roman et al reported that the average BC threshold did not differ pre- and postoperatively when FMT was positioned on the stapes and the incus.…”

“…7 Recently, another multicenter, prospective study suggested that mean postoperative BC thresholds remained stable at the long-term follow-up. 6 These results demonstrated that the function of the inner ear was not affected by implantation of the Clip coupler. Therefore, we confirmed that the VSB with the Clip coupler connected to the stapes head was a safe semi-implantation device for patients with CAA.…”

“…It is well known, that restoration of hearing using hearing aids has a positive impact on HRQoL [ 40 , 41 ]. In addition, there are multiple studies describing an improvement of HRQoL after hearing restoration with active bone conduction or middle ear implants [ 42 , 43 ]. Nevertheless, these implants do not aim to replace successful hearing restoration in middle ear surgery [ 44 ].…”

“…Additional coupling techniques were developed leading to new applications of the AMEI also allowing the treatment of CHL and MHL. Techniques for various FMT placements with and without couplers have been summarized in detail and proven to be stable over time [ 6 8 ].…”
