Long-term outcomes of silicone metacarpophalangeal arthroplasty: a longitudinal analysis of 325 cases

Abstract: An analysis was conducted of 325 consecutive metacarpophalangeal arthroplasties prospectively collected using a single institution's total joints registry over a 14-year time period to characterize long-term radiographic and functional outcomes. Patients were followed for a mean of 7.2 years (2-18) or until revision. The 5-, 10- and 15-year survival free from revision were 98%, 95% and 95%, respectively. The 5-, 10- and 15-year survival rates free from radiographic implant fracture were 93%, 58% and 35%, respe… Show more

“…Silicone implant arthroplasty is still a widely used method to reconstruct destructed finger joints in the rheumatoid patient, especially at the MCP level [38]. However, silicone implants are a suboptimal alternative in the non-rheumatoid patients, especially in young individuals, since these implants are coupled with a high fracture rate [39,41] (Tab. 2).…”

“…The current review demonstrates an increase in number and percentage of reported LOE in the J Hand Surg Eur publications. Among these publications with LOE declaration in the European journal, many are American authors (Boe et al., 2018; Clark et al., 2019a, 2019b, Kazmers et al., 2019; Lovy et al., 2019; Trehan et al., 2019). It is clear that it is not American authors who have resistance or difficulty in declaration of LOE.…”

“…Eine Langzeit-Nachuntersuchung von 325 Silikonspacern am MCP-Gelenk zeigte nach 15 Jahren eine Implantatbruchrate von 65 %, jedoch eine Revisionsrate von nur 5 % bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt. Weder ein Implantatbruch noch eine Deformität von > 10° Deviation in der Frontalebene hatten einen signifikanten Zusammenhang mit schlechter Funktion [23].…”
