Long‐Term Outcome of Patients With Idiopathic Ventricular Fibrillation: A Meta‐Analysis

Abstract: In patients with IVF, this meta-analysis revealed an estimated recurrent event rate of 31% and a pooled mortality rate of 3.1% during an average of 5 years follow-up. The results of baseline electrophysiological studies are not predictive of future ventricular arrhythmias.

“…The available data on appropriate ICD therapy in IVF patients show a high recurrence rate of ventricular arrhythmias, with appropriate ICD therapy in 11% to 45% in a mean follow-up of 3.2 to 5.3 years. 2,3,8,30,31 These results are comparable to our study and justify ICD implantation. In patients who experienced appropriate ICD therapy, a higher appropriate shock frequency was demonstrated in males, younger patients at the time of the index event, and patients who experienced symptoms before the index event.…”

“…An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is usually recommended for primary and secondary prevention of SCD in this population ( 3 , 4 ). However, around one third of patients with IVF, experience VF recurrence in the 5 years following diagnosis ( 5 ). VF ablation is recommended to prevent VF recurrence and reduce the number of ICD shocks ( 3 , 4 ).…”

“…ICD implantation in patients with IVF is justified by the high recurrence rate of ventricular arrhythmias, varying from 11% to 45%. 34,39,40 A meta-analysis showed recurrences of arrhythmias in 31% of the patients with IVF during a mean follow-up of 5.3 years. 40 Another study showed appropriate ICD therapy in 43% in a median follow-up of 8.8 years, but also included patients with ERS.…”
