Long-Term Outcome of Mustard/Senning Correction for Transposition of the Great Arteries in Sweden and Denmark

Abstract: Background-The atrial switch operation, the Mustard or Senning operation, for the transposition of the great arteries (TGA) was introduced in the late 1950s and was the preferred surgery for TGA until the early 1990s.

“…Atrial switch surgery became the procedure of choice for D‐TGA until the 1980s, when it was progressively replaced by the arterial switch operation. Over 60% of patients with D‐TGA and Senning or Mustard baffles remain alive after 30 years of follow‐up, with most now in their third to fifth decades of life. Complications encountered in adult life are well characterized and include sinus node dysfunction, atrial arrhythmias, sudden death, systemic right ventricular dysfunction, tricuspid regurgitation, subvalvular pulmonary stenosis, and baffle obstructions and leaks …”

“…Patients with a systemic right ventricle due to transposition of the great arteries (TGA) or congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (ccTGA) carry a life-long risk of systemic right ventricular dysfunction (Graham et al, 2000; Vejlstrup et al, 2015) and heart failure. The development of systemic ventricular dysfunction is reflected in the growing number of case series describing the outcome of VAD support for these patients (Joyce et al, 2010; Peng et al, 2014; Maly et al, 2015).…”

“…Egy másik dán-svéd közös tanulmányban a két műtéti technika hosszú távú utánkövetését vizsgálták [20]. Azt találták, hogy a hosszú távú túlélés nagyobb összefüggést mutat a JK-és a tricuspidalisbillentyű-funkcióval, mint a műtét típusával és annak időpontjával.…”
