Long‐term outcome of lacrimal stent intubation for complete acquired lacrimal drainage obstructions

Abstract: Purpose: To investigate long-term outcome and report reoperation rate of noninfected, complete acquired lacrimal drainage obstruction (ALDO) treated with canaliculodacryocystoplasty (CDCP) depending on site of stenosis. Method: Consecutive adult patients with non-infected, complete ALDO treated with CDCP were followed for 76 months. Location of stenosis at preoperative visit and intraoperative probing was recorded, and during follow-up, recurrence of stenosis prompting additional surgery and complications were… Show more

“…None of the patients treated with probing and stent intubation had recurrent dacryocystitis during the first year of follow-up, but three patients had further episodes of dacryocystitis during the second and third years of follow-up. This is line with previous studies, showing stenting to be less effective than DCR in treating lacrimal stenosis [17]. However, over half of the patients treated with stenting had no recurrence for at least the next 3 years, which shows that this form of treatment is of value in some settings.…”

“…DCR with membranectomy and intubation should be proposed to patients with distal common canalicular obstruction (Boboridis et al 2005), as other mini‐invasive procedures may result in a high reoperation rate (Bohman et al, 2020).…”

“…Clinicians may now reliably determine the location and type of the blockage because to advances in diagnostic modalities such as lacrimal probing, irrigation, and imaging methods. This understanding enables targeted interventions ranging from conservative measures such as warm compresses and topical medicines to surgical procedures such as dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) or canalicular repair [6]. This research tries to achieve a number of goals.…”
