Long term operation of the radiation-hard Hall probes system and the path toward a high performance hybrid magnetic field sensor

Abstract: The paper reports a systematic assessment of the Radiation-hard Hall Probes (RHP) magnetic diagnostic system of the JET tokamak, which is based on InSb semiconductor thin films, and describes the path that lead to the proposal of an innovative magnetic probe concept. A relevant account of RHP operation during the recent Deuterium-Tritium experimental campaign (DTE2) is also provided, showing correct operation under ITER-like intense neutron flux. The period considered for the systematic assessment of the RHP sys… Show more

“…Semiconductor-based Hall sensors are not suitable to the ITER NBI application, because semiconductors would be heavily damaged by radiation from high-energy neutrons and gamma radiation after a short operation period [ 5 ]. Metallic Hall sensors can be used in these conditions, but their limited sensitivity [ 6 ] and complexity [ 7 ] would not allow their use for this specific application. MEMS sensors and magnetoresistive sensors have been considered several years ago [ 8 , 9 , 10 ] but have been abandoned due to their insufficient tolerance to radiation.…”

“…Thermocurrent measurements are planned to be integrated within the divertor cassette [18], while Faraday sensors are distributed poloidally on the outer surface of the vacuum vessel (VV) [19]. Finally, magnetic sensors are distributed on the inner and outer surfaces of the VV [20][21][22].…”
