This study investigated the effects of Iroko wood flour (WF) and nano-titanium dioxide (TiO2) concentration on the properties of polypropylene (PP)-based composites, including accelerated weathering resistance, tribological behavior, thermal stability, physical characteristics, mechanical strength, morphological features, color changes, and surface roughness. The results showed that the presence of WF and TiO2 significantly influenced the density, hardness, thermal stability, crystallinity, coefficient of friction, and wear rate of the composites. Both fillers positively impacted the tensile strength, flexural strength, and flexural modulus of the composites, although the elongation at break values decreased. TiO2 addition enhanced thermal stability and protection against UV radiation, whereas using wood flour negatively affected color properties. Moreover, the surface roughness of the composites was affected by weathering time and wood flour content. These findings highlight the potential of WF and TiO2 as effective fillers for enhancing PP-based composites’ properties and weathering resistance.

Odun Plastik Kompozitler (OPK), termoplastik matris ve lignoselülozik bazlı takviye/dolgu maddesinin birleştirilmesiyle oluşturulan kompozitlerin genel adıdır. Polimer matris olarak polietilen, polipropilen ve polivinil klorür (PVC) gibi malzemeler ve dolgu maddesi olarak ise odun unu veya lifi kullanılarak OPK’ler üretilmektedir. OPK üretimi sırasında kompozitlerin estetik görünümünü iyileştirmek, fiziksel, mekanik ve hava koşullarına karşı dayanıklılıklarını artırma ve üretimini kolaylaştırmak için çeşitli katkı maddeleri kullanılmaktadır. OPK’ler çeşitli uygulama alanlarında istenilen fiziksel ve mekanik özellikleri karşılaması dolayısıyla tercih edilebilmektedir. Bu tip malzemeler özellikle dış cephe kaplaması, açık hava yer döşemeleri, çit, bahçe mobilyası gibi uygulamalarda özellikle tercih edilmektedir. OPK'lerin ahşap malzemeye göre başlıca avantajları arasında sağlamış oldukları iyi boyutsal kararlılık, mantar ve böceklere karşı dayanıklılık ve kullanım süreleri boyunca düşük bakım gereksinimi olması sayılabilir. Bu malzemelerin dış hava koşullarında degredasyona (bozunmaya) uğraması büyük bir dezavantaj oluşturmaktadır. Bu nedenle dış mekan uygulamalarında, OPK'lerin diğer polimer esaslı kompozitlere göre performansı genellikle daha düşüktür. Sıcaklıktaki değişiklikler (yüksek ve düşük), güneş ışığı, nem, oksijen ve diğer atmosferik kirleticiler gibi hava koşulları, OPK'lerin özellikleri üzerinde önemli bir rol oynamaktadır. Polimerik malzemeler çevresel faktörlerin etkisiyle fiziksel, kimyasal ve biyolojik süreçler veya bunların bir kombinasyonu ile bozunmaya uğramaktadırlar. Sıcaklık (termal bozunma), hava (oksidatif bozunma), nem (hidrolitik bozunma), mikroorganizmalar (biyobozunma), ışık (foto bozunma), yüksek enerjili radyasyon (UV, ışınlama), kimyasal ajanlar (korozyon) ve mekanik kuvvet gibi faktörler malzemede geri döndürülemez değişiklikler meydana getirebilmektedir. Bu faktörlerin etkilerini belirlemek amacıyla doğal ve suni yaşlandırma yapılarak polimer yapısındaki değişiklikler belirlenmektedir. Bu literatür çalışmasında OPK’ler üzerinde ilgili konuda gerçekleştirilen çalışmaların detaylı bir özet ve analizi sunulmaktadır.
