Long‐term maternal imprinting of the specific B cell repertoire by maternal antibodies

Abstract: Maternal antibodies protect newborns whilst they are immunologically immature. This study shows that maternal antibodies can also shape the B cell repertoire of the offspring long after the maternal antibodies themselves become undetectable. V H DJ H gene-targeted (VI10) mice expressing a heavy chain specific for vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) produce a 20-fold increased spontaneous titer of VSV-neutralizing antibodies. When transferred from mother to offspring, these antibodies prevented accumulation of Ag-… Show more

“…This could be especially the case for long-lived colonial birds such as Procellariiformes, which can breed in aggregates of thousands of pairs. In addition to protective effects against pathogens, maternal antibodies have been suggested to be responsible for an educational effect by acting on the ongoing process of lymphocytes maturation to select clones that display a higher reaction to selected parasites [50]. Maternal antibodies could also allow the occurrence of a 'natural vaccination' by attenuating the effects of an infection by a parasite, thus producing optimal conditions for the immunization of the newborn [51], a mechanism that might be particularly valuable in longlived species.…”

“…However, some evidence also supports a positive effect via immunological imprinting (Gasparini et al 2006;Grindstaff et al 2006;Reid et al 2006). The exact mechanism is unclear, but the B-cell repertoire may somehow model itself after antibodies in circulation (Fink et al 2008).…”

“…Therefore, maternal antibody plays an essential role in shaping the specific antibody repertoire and peripheral B cell development in the neonate long after the maternal antibodies themselves become undetectable (16,17).…”
