Intercropping kura clover (Trifolium ambiguum) (KC) with prairie cordgrass (Spartina pectinata) (PCG) has great potential for biofuel feedstock on marginal lands. This study evaluated the impacts of 10‐year PCG‐KC intercropping and PCG monoculture fertilized with different nitrogen (N) rates of granular urea (five treatments: PCG‐KC, PCG‐0N, PCG‐75N, PCG‐150N, and PCG‐225N) on soil biogeochemical properties: (i) in the surface soil (0‐ to 10‐cm depth) at three different sampling times during the crop growing season: spring (April, pre‐emergence), summer (June, active growth), and fall (November, post‐harvest); and (ii) at different soil depths (0–5, 5–15, 15–30, 30–45, and 45–60 cm) (only total carbon (C) and N) in fall 2021. All soil biogeochemical parameters were higher during summer as compared to spring and/or fall, except urease activity, ammonium‐N, microbial biomass C and N, and fluorescein diacetate (FDA). On average over the sampling times, PCG‐KC had significantly higher β‐glucosidase activity and hot‐water extractable organic N than PCG‐0N; but no significant difference between PCG‐KC and N‐fertilized PCG. Cold‐water extractable organic N was significantly lower than the highest N rate, but not significantly different from PCG‐0N and lower N rate treatments. Urease activity under PCG‐KC treatment was double that of PCG‐0N and PCG‐75N; FDA was higher in PCG‐KC than all monocultures. No treatment effect was found on soil total C and N, except that they decreased with depth. Overall, intercropping PCG‐KC showed some benefits in terms of promoting soil biogeochemical properties during crop growth periods, having lower residual reactive N in the soil, and maintaining biomass yield and quality on marginal lands.

Background The contribution of long-term fertilization to soil organic carbon (SOC) storage in arable soils is well acknowledged. The present study soil samples were collected from a 29 years long field trial in a red paddy soil of Jiangxi province, southern China to assess the effects of long-term fertilization on SOC storage and stability in top and sub-soil layers. The SOC storage of whole soil and SOC fractions were quantified at three soil depths (0–20, 20–40, 40–60 cm) under four treatments: no fertilization (Control), a combination of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK), double the rates of NPK (2NPK), NPK plus manure (NPKM). Results The results showed that the effect of inorganic fertilizer application on SOC storage across the soil profile (0–60 cm) was negligible except for the 2NPK treatment. The larger SOC storage of the Non-labile C fraction was observed in the 2NPK (25.0 t C·ha− 1) and NPKM (23.8 t C·ha− 1) treatments compared to other treatments, and the NPKM treatment significantly (p < 0.05) accreted the SOC storage of less-labile C fraction by 46.7% averagely compared to other treatments. Besides, the SOC storage of passive pool (less-labile C + non-labile C) under NPKM was 30.7% higher than that in the Control. This was further supported by the higher proportion of passive than active pool indicating that fertilization, especially organic combined with inorganic fertilization, improved soil C stability. Additionally, the effect of different fertilization on SOC storage was mainly reflected in the surface soil, while very weak in the deeper soil as revealed by the stratification ratio and C sequestration rate. Conclusion Inorganic fertilizer combined with organic fertilizer have the ability to increase the storage and stability of SOC which further depend on annual C input and differences in soil depths. Taken together, in red paddy soil, the current fertilization had a significant effect on changing the dynamics of SOC in the topsoil, but a weak effect on the subsoil.

IntroductionRice, as a staple food in several Asian countries, contributes to approximately 10% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during its cultivation. Furthermore, nitrogen fertilization increases the accumulation of GHG emissions. This study aims to investigate GHG emissions, including methane (CH4) and nitrous Oxide (N2O) resulting from the common fertilizer variations used by farmers in Indonesia for two rice varieties, Way Apo Buru and Inpari 32, and their relationship to rice yield. MethodsThe research was conducted from August to November 2022 in an open field located in Jember, Indonesia. Two rice varieties, Inpari 32 and Way Apo Buru, were employed in this study. Fertilization variations included Urea (46%-N), ZA (21%-N 24%-S), SP-36 (36%-P & 5%-S), KCl (250:100:50:50 kg ha-1) (P1); NPK (16%-N:16%-P:16%-K), Urea (46%-N), ZA (21%-N & 24%-S) (225:175:100 kg ha-1) (P2); NPK (12%-N:12%-P:17%-K), Urea (46%-N), ZA (21%-N & 24%-S) (175:150:100 kg ha-1) (P3); and NPKS (P1) + chicken manure fertilizer 5 tonnes ha-1 (P4).ResultsIn this research, Inpari 32 rice achieved greater yields while also exhibiting higher global warming potential. Applying NPKS fertilizer in combination with 5 tonnes ha-1 of manure fertilizer (referred to as P4) resulted in a substantial increase in rice yield compared to alternative fertilizer formulations. DiscussionsThe various inorganic fertilizers had a relatively similar influence on growth, production yield, and greenhouse gas emissions (CH4 and N2O). However, the fertilizer NPKS and 5 tonnes manure fertilizer resulted in the lowest CH4 emissions and global warming potential values.
