Long‐term macular function in eyes with central serous chorioretinopathy

Abstract: Patients with unilateral CSCR were observed to have long-term bilateral colour discrimination defects, and eyes with clinical CSCR were determined to have central relative scotoma and loss of contrast sensitivity.

“…Overall, these findings indicate the persistence of metamorphopsia, irrespective of the resolution of SRF, a decrease of OCT retinal thickness and improvements in the mean MP retinal sensitivity and visual acuity. This seems to be consistent with a study reporting that despite spontaneous complete recovery of visual acuity after an acute episode of CSC, the majority of patients experience metamorphopsia in the long-term follow-up [28]. …”

“…Acute CSC is a self-limited disease and SRF usually resolves spontaneously within 3-4 months after the beginning of symptoms. 14 Recurrence rate reported in the literature differs largely because of the heterogeneity of follow-up periods within studies. Hence, recurrence rate of acute CSC was reported to vary between 15 and 50% in spontaneously resolved patients.…”

“…8,9 However, there may be residual symptoms such as decreased retinal sensitivity, metamorphopsia, decreased VA, and central scotoma. [10][11][12] In chronic cases, visual function declines because unresolved retinal detachment can lead to RPE and photoreceptor damage. 13,14 The usefulness of microperimetry (MP) in evaluating retinal sensitivity (RS) and central retinal field function is well known in resolved CSC.…”
