Long-term Gastrointestinal Symptoms After Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication

Abstract: Patients who have undergone fundoplication may be at risk for recurrent gastroesophageal reflux and may experience postoperative gastrointestinal symptoms. We investigated the long-term symptomatic outcome after laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication. Between 1993 and 1998 we treated 60 patients with laparoscopic fundoplication for gastroesophageal reflux disease. Signs of recurrence and gastrointestinal symptoms were assessed in 55 (92%) patients after a minimum follow-up of 1 year (median: 3.6 years). At follow-… Show more

“…Previous studies have examined the spectrum of gastrointestinal symptoms after fundoplication in the short term and noted that the majority of patients exhibit some gastrointestinal side effects, such as early satiety and dysphagia, in the immediate postoperative period [15]. The results of this LOSP, lower esophageal sphincter resting pressure study correspond with those of a French study [6] and one from Switzerland [2] and show that flatulence was the most prevalent of all functional symptoms (66% of patients with at least moderate severity) in the long term. More important, it was the only symptom that significantly worsened overall in both severity and frequency as a result of surgery.…”

“…In an extensive review by Beldi et al of postoperative gastrointestinal symptoms after open or laparoscopic fundoplication, 12-88% of patients complained of flatulence, 17-100% of early satiety and fullness, and 15-56% of meteorism [1]. In an unpublished review of several hundred patients from our institution, 51% complained of increased abdominal cramping and bloating which was severe in only 6%.…”
