Long-term Formation of Aggressive Bony Lesions in Dogs with Mid-Diaphyseal Fractures Stabilized with Metallic Plates: Incidence in a Tertiary Referral Hospital Population

Abstract: The incidence of complications secondary to fracture stabilization, particularly osteolytic lesions and bony tumor formation, has long been difficult to evaluate. The objective of this study was to describe the long-term incidence of aggressive bony changes developing in dogs with long bone diaphyseal fractures stabilized by metallic bone plates compared to a breed-, sex-, and age-matched control group. The medical records of a tertiary referral center were retrospectively reviewed for dogs that matched each r… Show more

“…Osteosarcoma risk also appears to increase in conditions that drive osteoblast proliferation, such as surgical fracture repair [21,97,98] and orthopedic implant surgery [99,100,101,102,103]. Interestingly, an observation has been stated that AKC-registered “show” greyhounds are at lower risk for developing osteosarcoma than racing greyhounds (G. Couto, unpublished observation, [104]).…”

“…30 Factors possibly promoting the development of fracture-related sarcomas include patient sensitivity to the implant, implant corrosion, instability of the fracture or inappropriate bone healing. 33 It is likely that in our Labrador's case the metal implant was the trigger for the second OS development. However, due to the post-TPLO occurrence in the same location as the first tumour, it is equally possible that the second tumour is not directly linked to the metal implant.…”

“…However, when either one could be used, the relative advantages and disadvantages of each method influence the choice of technique. These have been reported in detail in the literature and are well described 15‐20 . However, despite the information available from these studies, a gap in knowledge remains.…”

“…These have been reported in detail in the literature and are well described. [15][16][17][18][19][20] However, despite the information available from these studies, a gap in knowledge remains. Specifically, no previous researchers have directly compared the mechanical response of LCP to that of ESF in a comminuted fracture model through matched testing.…”
