“…It can be used in acute burn treatment and reconstruction procedures, as a single layer in trauma cases, or on other skin loss areas after surgery for tumor or nevus removal. It is very effective in functional and cosmetic improvements [7][8][9][10] and postprocedure contracture defects are found to be insignificant [11]. For the present patient, the cosmetic and functional appearance on his left arm was improved.…”

“…Artificial dermis has emerged as a medical material for healing deep skin defects, where it is gradually replaced by dermal-like granulation tissue, and has been used mainly in plastic surgery to date. 10) We here describe the use of artificial dermis in decompressive skinplasty for the control of intracranial pressure to manage severe brain swelling. We applied Pelnac } onto the artificial dura in the first two cases and onto the temporal muscle in the latter 3 cases.…”

“…The grafting of allogeneic dried dura mater as a medical material had significant relation to the onset of the fatal encephalopathy, CJD (5), suggesting that the infection of abnormal prion protein from the biomaterial to human subjects had occurred (32). Because the commercial artificial dermises frequently used in the field of dermatology and the plastic reconstructive surgery are made of the collagen extracted from mammals (21,35), it cannot be completely denied that abnormal prion proteins and/or an unknown pathogen contaminate these materials. The utilization of a chemical compound like poly(-l-lactic acid) as a medical material does not cause infectious diseases, but the biological affinity of chemical compounds is generally lower than that of materials derived from creatures and a chemical compound often causes inflammation at the contact site when it is transplanted into or onto a creature (6).…”
