“…However, our study shows that treatment strategy-related complications occurred in both AS and AC. In the era of aggressive surgery, the surgery-related complications of renal loss or retrograde ejaculation were found [9], while in the era of intense systemic chemotherapy hearing impairment was found exclusively in the advanced disease patients. Endocrine disturbances such as amenorrhea or precocious puberty were also observed.…”

“…Because all of the 55 patients who were detected by mass screening were alive regardless of the clinical stages, they were excluded from this study, 103 non-mass patients were analyzed in this study. These patients were classified into three groups according to the chronological differences in the treatment strategy for patients with advanced disease, details of which were described previously [9]. Briefly, the period of aggressive surgery (AS group: 43 patients) from 1967 to 1984 was characterized by a maximum surgical resection of the tumor associated with a radical lymph node dissection as the first step of treatment followed by mild chemotherapy compatible with James' regimen.…”

“…The long-term followup status of the patients has been previously reported. 32 When the survival curve was compared between the AC and AS groups, it reached a plateau within 3 years in the AS group, while a second major drop of the survival curve was found in the AC group due to the late mortality of seven patients 10 years after treatment (Fig. 2).…”
