Long-term follow-up of an IgA nephropathy cohort: outcomes and risk factors

Abstract: Aim IgA nephropathy (IgAN), the most common glomerulopathy worldwide and in Uruguay, raised treatment controversies. The study aimed to analyze long-term IgAN outcomes and treatment. Methods A retrospective analysis of a Uruguayan IgAN cohort, enrolled between 1985 and 2009 and followed up until 2020, was performed. The Ethics Committee approved the study. The inclusion criteria were (a) biopsy-proven IgAN; (b) age ≥12 years; and (c) available clinical, histologic, and … Show more

“…Few studies specifically focus on mortality as a separate endpoint in IgAN (Table 3), often combining it with ESKD in a composite endpoint and not detailing each event individually [32,33]. Addressing vital survival separately is crucial, particularly given IgAN's impact on a younger demographic and its significant social and economic effects [34].…”

“…The clinical manifestations of IgAN vary from asymptomatic microscopic hematuria to rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis. Approximately 20-30% of patients progress to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) within 20 years of diagnosis [10,11].…”

“…Proteinuria is a common clinical manifestation of IgAN ( Xia et al, 2022 ). Notably, proteinuria is the primary risk factor for renal function deterioration in individuals diagnosed with IgAN ( Gadola et al, 2023 ). Approximately 30%–40% of IgAN cases progress to end-stage renal disease within 10–20 years after diagnosis, necessitating dialysis or kidney transplantation for life-sustaining treatment.…”
