“…Until recently, AKI has been viewed as a transient, self‐limiting syndrome, but this hypothesis is being disproved by multiple observational studies, pointing to long‐term kidney damage even after a single AKI episode . More than 50% of patients with childhood AML will require an allogeneic HSCT to consolidate high‐risk disease or to salvage relapse disease.…”

“…As shown in several studies involving critically ill children, AKI is independently associated with an increase in mortality, ventilation requirements, and hospital length of stay . Survivors of AKI are also at risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD) later in life …”

“…77 A study reported by Mel et al of 25 children who required peritoneal dialysis for cardiac surgery-associated AKI showed that only one patient had a reduction in eGFR at a mean follow up of 5 years, and none developed proteinuria. 78 A recent study by Cooper et al followed 51 children who underwent cardiopulmonary bypass (33 with AKI defined as a ≥50% increase in serum creatinine from baseline and 18 without AKI) for a mean duration of 7 years. 79 Children in both groups displayed normal eGFR, normal blood pressures, and normal levels of proteinuria and microalbuminuria.…”

“…Mel et al showed that long-term renal prognosis in survivors was good in 76 children in whom postoperative AKI developed and who were managed with PD in a single-center, cohort study at long-term follow-up (3.5–10.5 years). Of the 76 children included in that study, 35 died during the immediate postoperative period, 15 died during the interim of nonrenal causes, and 26 were alive at the time of follow-up evaluation [62]. There is a possibility that pediatric patients with AKI after cardiac surgery have a different prognosis from that for adult patients with AKI after cardiac surgery.…”
