Long-term follow-up and patient satisfaction after reduction mammoplasty: Superomedial versus inferior pedicle

Abstract: Background:Surgery for hypertrophied breasts represents a challenge for plastic surgeons. The search for a good post-surgical cosmetic breast has led to the development of many techniques. Objectives for reduction mammoplasty are to achieve elevated, symmetrical breasts, a round shape, good projection, small cicatrices that are not very perceptible, and a lasting result.Patients and Methods:This study was carried out on sixty cases who had done reduction mammoplasty from January 2009 to December 2014. All pati… Show more

“…Others have also noted easy inset of larger breast reductions and faster operative times attributed to decreased flap de-epithelialization, minimal superior flap creation or undermining, and single en bloc resection of breast parenchyma. 28,[30][31][32][33][34]46 It was found during the literature review, that the majority of studies did not specify pedicle type used or quoted complication statistics that were performed using mixed pedicle patient population. No large population size studies were noted in the literature that examined complication rates associated with the superomedial pedicle technique nor compared it against other pre-existing or more established reduction mammaplasty techniques.…”

“…According to a study by Makboul et al, [16], the superomedial pedicle shows better long term aesthetics, projection and contour of the breast in addition to the less incidence of glandular ptosis. Our study confirmed these findings as there was a statistically significant difference between Group (A) and Group (B).…”

“…The results in plastic surgery are evaluated in terms of not only morbidity and mortality, but mainly patient satisfaction, and the surgeon’s perception of the outcome is often different from the patient’s perception ( 20 - 22 ). The importance of understanding the patient’s perception about the surgical outcome and the impact that plastic surgery can have on the patient’s quality of life is being increasingly recognized.…”
