Long-Term Exercise Maintenance, Physical Activity, and Health-Related Quality of Life After Cardiac Rehabilitation

Abstract: At >18 mos after acute myocardial infarction, the exercise maintenance rate in our patients remains high, and exercise maintenance may be one of the factors contributing to improvement of health-related quality of life and leisure-time objective physical activity level.

“…23,24 Using objective measures in large crosssectional studies of CR graduates is rare, with only 2 groups utilizing heart rate wristwatch monitors 22 and pedometers. 25 Additionally, discrepancies in reported PA participation may be related to the amount of time since CR graduation, which ranges across studies from 1 month to a few years. However, there was no significant relationship between PA levels and time since graduation in the current study.…”

“…Many of the findings were consistent with the literature; greater PA was significantly associated with male sex, younger age, better perceived health status, higher VO 2 peak, better cholesterol control, greater social support, higher income, location, being married, and full-time work status. 21,25 To our knowledge, we were first to identify among this population a significant relationship between PA and the correlates of PA enjoyment, number of comorbidities, fear of falling, mode of transportation to PA, and CR staff support. The PA enjoyment variable is particularly interesting.…”

“…Izawa et al 22 After a cardiac rehabilitation program, two groups were followed for 6 months. One maintained PA (mean 9,252 steps/day, 1,909 kcal/ day) and the other one did not maintain it (mean 4,246 steps/day, 1,672 kcal/day).…”

“…Empirical evidence show that completion of cardiac rehabilitation programs is related to increased exercise tolerance (Balady et al, 1996;Milani, Lavie, & Mehra, 2004), exercise maintenance, quality of life, and leisure-time physical activity (Izawa et al, 2004), as well as improved perception of physical function (Dolansky & Moore, 2004). Given the quantity of evidence supporting the effects of cardiac rehabilitation in increasing physical activity and overcoming psychosocial barriers to exercise (Boesch et al, 2005;Lavie & Milani, 1996;Lavie et al, 1999;Song & Lee, 2001;Worcester et al, 2003), it was not surprising that cardiac rehabilitation enrollment distinguished significantly among Irregular Exercisers and Inactive participants, and between Exercise Maintainers and Inactive participants.…”
