“…in the game enclosure area, a significant (P < 0.05) increase in soil ph (6.1 ± 0.2  6.7 ± 0.3) was found as a result of intensive liming of the inundation area. there was only a small non-significant increase in ph at the remaining part of the area monitored (6.4 ± 0.3), with no significant differences in soil concentrations of the tested substances in individual time periods, which is in good agreement with literary data (Bergkvist et al 2003;makela-kurtto and sippola 2002;Wang et al 1997). Feedstuffs cadmium is an element with a high bioaccumulation index in the 1-10 range (Pais and Jones 1997).…”

“…When comparing the two organically fertilized soils, the number of nitrate reducers (narG) and denitrifiers (nirS, nosZ) were significantly lower in the plots treated with sewage sludge than in the ones with manure. The lower pH of 4.7 in the sludge plots compared with that of 6.0 in the manuretreated plot, in combination with the higher heavy metal content measured in the sludge plots (Bergkvist et al, 2003) could counteract the positive effects expected by high organic inputs. Overall, the size of these functional guilds was one to two orders of magnitude lower in the ammonium sulfate treatment compared with the other treatments.…”

“…Subsoil data are few due to sampling restrictions given by the small plots. Estimates are only available for 1956 (ρ=1.49 g cm -3 at 20-30 cm depth; Eriksson, 1980) and for 1997 (Bergkvist et al, 2003) in treatment C (ρ=1.41 g cm -3 at 20-25 cm depth) and in treatment O (ρ=1.30 g cm -3 at 20-25 cm and ρ=1.49 g cm -3 at 25-30 cm depth). We used the bulk density measurement for treatment O in all cases where z eq >20 cm.…”
