Identifying and quantifying conservation-practice adoption in U.S. cropland is key to accurately monitoring trends in soil health regionally and nationally and informing climate change mitigation efforts. We present the results of an automated system used across 645 counties in the United States Corn Belt from 2005 to 2018, mapped at field-scale and summarized for distribution at aggregated scales. Large-scale mapping by OpTIS (Operational Tillage Information System), a software tool that analyzes remotely sensed data of agricultural land, provides trends of conservation tillage (defined as >30% residue cover), cover cropping, and crop rotations, while modeling by DNDC (Denitrification–Decomposition), a process-based model of carbon and biogeochemistry in soil, provides estimates of the ecosystem outcomes associated with the changes in management practices mapped by OpTIS. Ground-truthing data acquired via OpTIS mobile, a roadside field-surveying app, were used for verification in 30 counties. OpTIS results for the Corn Belt show adoption of cover crops after planting corn and soy increased from 1% to 3% of the mapped area when comparing 2006 to 2018. Comparison of trends for conservation tillage use from 2006 to 2018 shows a slight decrease in conservation tillage adoption, from 46% to 44%. Results from DNDC show these soils sequestered soil organic carbon (SOC) at an area-weighted mean change in SOC (dSOC) rate of 161 kgC/ha/year. Comparatively, in a scenario modeled without the adoption of soil health management practices, the same soils would have lost SOC at an area-weighted rate of −65 kgC/ha/year. As many factors affect changes to SOC, including climate and initial SOC in soils, modeling counterfactual scenarios at the field scale demonstrates outcomes of current soil health management in comparison to regional management practices and best management practices, with respect to SOC sequestration. Regional trends in adoption rates of conservation agriculture and resulting soil health implications are of great use for a wide range of stakeholders. We demonstrate the capability of OpTIS remote sensing to deliver robust, large-scale, multi-sensor, ground-verified monitoring data of current and historical adoption of conservation practices, and of DNDC process-based modeling to provide assessments of the associated environmental outcomes across regions in U.S. cropland.

: Nitrogen (N) fertilizer is known to improve the quality and biomass of vegetables, but it is unclear how to manage the large amount of NO3-N that accumulates in the soil after vegetable harvest. In this study, we examined the influence of irrigation level and irrigation frequency on the growth and soil residual NO3-N of the catch crop mini Chinese cabbage (Brassica pekinensis) in a greenhouse. Using conventional border irrigation with adequate water supply as a control (CK), three irrigation levels (WH: 160% crop evapotranspiration (ETc), WM: 120% ETc and WL: 80% ETc) and three irrigation frequencies (intervals of F2: 2 days, F4: 4 days, and F8: 8 days) were assessed in 2014, 2015 and 2016 in northwest China. The results showed that the weight of the leaves and leaf stalks was the primary determinant of yield, and that these are the primary N-containing vegetative organs of the plants. At the same irrigation level, the total N content of the plants increased in the order F8 < F2 < F4. The trend in the total N content in the mini Chinese cabbage plants among different treatments was synchronized with the yield. The highest total N content in the plants was observed in the WMF4 treatment during all three years. The three-year averages of mini Chinese cabbage aboveground biomass, yield and water use efficiency (WUE) in the WMF4 treatment were 60%, 64.5% and 119.2% higher respectively than in the CK treatment. The residual NO3-N content in the soil in the WMF4 treatment was only 1.3% higher than that in the CK treatment. The total N uptake in the WMF4 treatment was 79.2% higher than that in the CK treatment, and the N loss in the WMF4 treatment was 46.3% lower than that in the CK treatment. Under these experimental conditions, the WMF4 treatment can be recommended as an appropriate irrigation regime for mini Chinese cabbage under fallow greenhouse management in northwest China.

This chapter provides an extensive review of paleomonsoon variability on millennial-to decadal time scales in various archives other than loess, including speleothems, lake sediments, peat deposits, desert deposits, marine sediments, corals, ice cores, tree rings, pollen archives and historical documents. Case studies will be presented to introduce the major proxy indexes associated with these archives, and the reconstructed history of Asian monsoon variability. Advances in the study of monsoon variability and the peculiarity of different archives will also be introduced in this chapter.Keywords Speleothems · Lake sediments · Peat · Desert · Marine sediments · Coral · Ice cores · Tree ring · Pollen · Historical documents Overview of Various Paleoclimate ArchivesAs described in the previous chapter, the eolian loess sequence, a unique geological archive in the world, plays an important role in studying the climatic and environmental changes in China as it documents the variability of both Asian monsoon and the aridification of inland Asia. It has the advantages of being relatively continuous and long-lasting for studying the monsoon changes and inland aridifications on tectonic and orbital time scales, and even has the potential for studies of monsoon variations on millennial time scales at some sites. However, other geo-biological archives and historical records are also essential in studying the Asian monsoon changes, as they provide indispensable information for fully understanding Asian monsoon changes and its dynamic forces and environmental effects, especially on the millennial to decadal time scales. For example, taking advantage of high-precision absolute U-series dating, speleothems from karst caves, provide the ages of the abrupt events that occurred within the Asian monsoon regions and make it possible to correlate these events with global climate changes, enhancing greatly our understanding of the linkage between Asian monsoon and global climate change. With multiple proxies, lake sediments are good at providing the integrated information on hydrology, weathering processes, biomass and other aspects within the drainage systems. Coral records may indicate the changes in moisture supply from the tropical ocean, ocean circulation, sea surface temperature and other parameters linked closely with monsoon climate. Tree-ring records provide annual changes of regional temperature, precipitation and the hydrological environment, and are the basis to fully describe the present global warming and the anthropogenic contribution. As the direct index of vegetation, pollen assemblages indicate the succession of vegetation associated with monsoon changes, revealing variations in moisture availability and temperature.
