Long-term effects of cardiac rehabilitation in elderly individuals with stable coronary artery disease

Abstract: Fitness benefits of long-term maintenance cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs remain unknown. Elderly individuals with coronary artery disease participating in maintenance CR have exercise capacity and cardiorespiratory response to exercise similar to their less active healthy peers. Maintenance CR may play an important role prolonging independent living in elderly individuals.

“…This protocol design would allow to answer important questions and will open new perspectives helping both clinicians and researchers. If the results showed unfavorable impact on autonomic behavior and cardiorespiratory parameters, and that the liquid reposition attenuates this impact, these findings will add an important contribution to cardiovascular rehabilitation program [6][7][8][9][10][11]45 . Furthermore, to study the recovery period after physical exercise is fundamental since cardiovascular events and sympathovagal unbalance can occur during this period 46,47 .…”

“…Firstly, patients with different symptoms are suitable for varying training methods, and different training methods can produce varying benefits at different stages of the disease. For example, long-term continuous aerobic exercise training plays an important role in maintaining the health and well-being of patients with cardiovascular disease, including the potential to maintain self-care ability and clinical benefits during aging [39]. Short HIIT is useful in the initial and improved stages of cardiac rehabilitation, whilst MICT or HIIT regimens are more appropriate for the improvement and maintenance stages, as they have higher physiological stimulation [21].…”
