Wheat crown rot is a harmful disease that can be caused by different pathogens. The control of this disease is complicated because of the diversity of pathogens and an insufficient efficacy of fungicides; therefore, the agronomic practices of wheat production are an important tool for reducing the disease development. The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence of wheat crown rot depending on soil tillage system and on the pre-crop of wheat in the year 2016. The field experiment was carried out at the Research and Study farm 'Peterlauki' of the Latvia University of Agriculture in the autumn of 2008. The data obtained in 2016 are analyzed in this study: A -soil tillage system: 1 -traditional soil tillage with ploughing at the depth of 22 -24 cm, 2 -reduced soil tillage with disc harrowing up to the depth of 10 cm; B -pre-crop of winter wheat: 1 -wheat, 2 -oilseed rape, 3 -faba beans. The incidence of crown rot was not influenced by soil tillage system, but the impact of pre-crop was significant (p = 0.006). The level of disease was essentially higher in continuous wheat sowings. The experiments showed that the main causal agents of the disease were Fusarium spp. and Oculimacula spp. The spectrum of pathogens was not dependent on a particular agronomic practice.

Winter wheat samples infected by eyespot were collected during the years 2015-2017. In total 143 Oculimacula spp. isolates were obtained and determined by PCR. Oculimacula yallundae isolates prevailed (122) over Oculimacula acuformis isolates (12) and 9 mixed isolates of both species. O. acuformis predominated only on one locality. The reaction of 104 Oculimacula spp. isolates to ten different fungicides was evaluated in laboratory tests on Petri dishes. The highest efficacy showed the combination of epoxiconazole + fluxapyroxad + pyraclostrobin and the lowest efficacy was evaluated after application of prothioconazole + trifloxy strobin. The decrease of efficacy of fungicide no. 6 (prothioconazole + trifloxystrobin) has been observed since 2015. The sensitivity of 114 Oculimacula spp. isolates to prochloraz has been tested. More than half of the isolates (58%) showed low to medium resistance. One isolate of O. yallundae from the year 2017 showed high resistance to prochloraz (ED 50 ranged 1.7 µg • ml -1 ). The rest of the isolates (42%) were sensitive to prochloraz.

Dual Mode of the Saponin Aescin in Plant Protection: Antifungal Agent and Plant Defense Elicitor

Being natural plant antimicrobials, saponins have potential for use as biopesticides. Nevertheless, their activity in plant–pathogen interaction is poorly understood. We performed a comparative study of saponins' antifungal activities on important crop pathogens based on their effective dose (EC50) values. Among those saponins tested, aescin showed itself to be the strongest antifungal agent. The antifungal effect of aescin could be reversed by ergosterol, thus suggesting that aescin interferes with fungal sterols. We tested the effect of aescin on plant–pathogen interaction in two different pathosystems: Brassica napus versus (fungus) Leptosphaeria maculans and Arabidopsis thaliana versus (bacterium) Pseudomonas syringae pv tomato DC3000 (Pst DC3000). We analyzed resistance assays, defense gene transcription, phytohormonal production, and reactive oxygen species production. Aescin activated B. napus defense through induction of the salicylic acid pathway and oxidative burst. This defense response led finally to highly efficient plant protection against L. maculans that was comparable to the effect of fungicides. Aescin also inhibited colonization of A. thaliana by Pst DC3000, the effect being based on active elicitation of salicylic acid (SA)-dependent immune mechanisms and without any direct antibacterial effect detected. Therefore, this study brings the first report on the ability of saponins to trigger plant immune responses. Taken together, aescin in addition to its antifungal properties activates plant immunity in two different plant species and provides SA-dependent resistance against both fungal and bacterial pathogens.
