Long-term daily hydrometeorological drought indices, soil moisture, and evapotranspiration for ICOS sites

Abstract: Eddy covariance sites are ideally suited for the study of extreme events on ecosystems as they allow the exchange of trace gases and energy fluxes between ecosystems and the lower atmosphere to be directly measured on a continuous basis. However, standardized definitions of hydroclimatic extremes are needed to render studies of extreme events comparable across sites. This requires longer datasets than are available from on-site measurements in order to capture the full range of climatic variability. We present… Show more

“…Such dry conditions during annually more than 2 weeks have been recorded at this site only five times since 1950. However, out of these five times, three occurred after 2010 (2011,2018,2020) (Pohl et al, 2022). The results from the temperate ecosystem confirm statements from the classic literature that SVA is strongest in central-European climate conditions in late summer when the soil is dry and uncovered (Blume et al, 2016b).…”

“…In this time period (20 July 2018 until 22 August 2018) the Standardized Precipitation Evaporation Index (aggregated over 30 d; SPEI_30) at DE-RuS indicates extreme drought (Appendix Fig. E1; Svoboda et al, 2002) (Pohl et al, 2023(Pohl et al, , 2022. “…Reference ET, estimated based on the Hargreaves–Samani model using ERA‐5 air temperature data (daily minimum, maximum, and mean) as input (Hargreaves & Samani, 1985). The Hargreaves‐Samani model is a parsimonious option with low data demand and reasonable accuracy (Pohl et al., 2023) and was therefore chosen in this study based on previous experiments showing that different formulations of PET/ET ref could be applied with no significant impact on the simulations regarding capturing the inter‐annual variability across different European regions (Rakovec, Kumar, Mai, et al., 2016).…”
