Long-Term Citalopram Treatment Alters the Stress Responses of the Cortical Dopamine and Noradrenaline Systems: the Role of Cortical 5-HT1AReceptors

Abstract: Background:Cortical dopamine and noradrenaline are involved in the stress response. Citalopram, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, has direct and indirect effects on the serotonergic system. Furthermore, long-term treatment with citalopram affects the dopamine and noradrenaline systems, which could contribute to the therapeutic action of antidepressants. Methods:The effects of long-term treatment with citalopram on the responses of the dopamine and noradrenaline systems in the rat prefrontal cortex to ac… Show more

“…Thus, the effectiveness of dopamine antagonists such as risperidone and quetiapine and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as citalopram (which also has been shown to decrease dopamine in the brain) in this condition can be readily explained. 27 In a similar vein, amantadine is a dopamine receptor agonist, which could potentially explain the resulting psychosis and delusions in patient 11.…”

“…The stereotaxic coordinate of the implantation of the probes was A/P 1.4 mm, L/M 0.6 mm, V/D 4.5 mm from the bregma and dura for the NAc region. After surgery, the mice were housed individually in acrylic boxes (30 × 30 × 40 cm) and allowed to recover for 48 h before performance of microdialysis experiments as previously described (Kawahara et al 2009, 2013, Kaneko et al 2016). The recovery time of 48 h was adopted based on the previous report that the micordialysis experiments must be performed within an optimal time window, usually 24–48 h after the probe implantation (Di Chiara et al 1996).…”

“…Microdialysis experiments were conducted 24-48 h after implantation of the probe, as previously described [23]. Mice in which dialysis probes were misplaced were not included in the data analysis.…”
