Long‐term change of ant community structure in cacao agroforestry landscapes in Indonesia

Abstract: Land‐use change and agricultural intensification can strongly affect biodiversity in agricultural landscapes. Although many studies investigate management impacts, data on the long‐term change of species communities in agroecosystems are scarce. We analysed the long‐term change in diversity and composition of ant communities in cacao agroforestry systems in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia and attempted to disentangle the driving factors of this change. Ant communities were resampled in 2009 from sites for which pr… Show more

“…It supported the concept that ecosystem diversity is a key element in biodiversity conservation (Petal, 1971;Dahms et al, 2005;Rizali et al, 2013). The study is relevant also in showing the way in which orchard design and management Code for level of management practice: SCare: (À) = no soil care, (+) = shallow tillage and/or mechanical weeding of soil.…”

“…Moreover, although it has been previously reported in some studies (e.g. Rizali et al 2012), the effect of sampling time or seasonality on diversity patterns across spatial scales are rarely investigated.…”

“…The driving factors behind biodiversity loss may work either at a small spatial scales, such as habitat type and management intensity (Klein et al 2002;Shahabuddin et al 2005;Shahabuddin et al 2010) or at a larger scales such as land-use changes at the landscape or regional level (i.e. Tylianakis et al 2006;Rizali et al 2012). During the last decade, biodiversity conservation programs have shifted from the management of individual species within habitats to the preservation of entire communities within ecoregions (Gaston et al 2001;Summerville et al 2003).…”

“…A reabilitação com espécies exóticas de capim cria um ambiente diferente daquele com vegetação nativa, além de atrasar o processo de reabilitação e de colonização de plantas e de formigas poneromorfas (WALKER; DEL MORAL, 2003;RIBAS et al, 2012b). Assim, esse tipo de reabilitação gera um ambiente simplifi cado com baixa quantidade de matéria orgânica, difi cultando a recolonização da fl ora e fauna nativa (RIZALI et al, 2013).…”
