“…23 MMC is a potent wound modulator and may have contributed to the significant reduction of postoperative IOP in our TRAB cohort (7.75) relative to the DS cohort (12.27) (P < 0.01), which is consistent with the literature. However, the trade-off is the increased risk of complications, such as bleb leaks, 24 infections 25 and endophthalmitis. 26 This may be minimized by the use of fornix-based TRAB, which has been shown to reduce the incidence of bleb leak and late bleb-related infections.…”

“…In this report, Jampel et al recorded blepharitis from documentation in the patient's records, whereas our study examined each patient thereby improving case ascertainment. A recent study by Kim et al 19 however did find chronic blepharitis to be a significant risk factor for BRI (HR 7.6, p=0.003). This study was of the similar size as that of ours, but relied on medical notes for the clinical findings thus was prone to recording bias.…”

“…Many studies have attributed bleb leak as a risk factor for BRI 7 19. Jampel et al 2 also reported an association between bleb leak and BRI in their case–control study but this was not present in multivariate analysis suggesting confounding.…”

“…Bleb failure leading to insufficient lowering of IOP represents a more frequent complication after trabeculectomy and can happen in early as well as later follow-up [20, 21]. Frequent reasons for an early insufficiency of the bleb can be obstruction of the internal ostium of the trabeculectomy, episcleral and conjunctival fibrosis, or encapsulation of the bleb [22].…”
