Long‐range transport of Saharan dust to northern Europe: The 11–16 October 2001 outbreak observed with EARLINET

Abstract: [1] The spread of mineral particles over southwestern, western, and central Europe resulting from a strong Saharan dust outbreak in October 2001 was observed at 10 stations of the European Aerosol Research Lidar Network (EARLINET). For the first time, an optically dense desert dust plume over Europe was characterized coherently with high vertical resolution on a continental scale. The main layer was located above the boundary layer (above 1-km height above sea level (asl)) up to 3-5-km height, and traces of du… Show more

“…In Europe, systematic Saharan dust studies with polarization lidars began in the 1990s (Gobbi, 1998;Gobbi et al, 2000;di Sarra et al, 2001). Dust was investigated later on by means of polarization lidar in the framework of the European Aerosol Research Lidar Network (e.g., Ansmann et al, 2003). All of the ground-based observations, conducted before SALTRACE, were based on single-wavelength lidar observations, although several single-wavelength-lidar systems were combined during dedicated field campaigns such as SAMUM-1 and 2 Groß et al, 2011b;Tesche et al, 2011a).…”
