Long-Range Ordering of Ionic Liquid Fluid Films

Abstract: We report the transformation of ionic liquid films from isotropic bulk to a fluid-ordered state over micrometer length scales. Data from infrared and nonlinear spectroscopy measurements show clear transitions that, for varying ionic liquids, occur over time frames of 10 min to 2 h. These maturation times depend linearly on the chosen ionic liquids' bulk viscosities. Interestingly, the ionic liquids do not form solids upon ordering but do exhibit strong preferential alignments of molecules that persist througho… Show more

“…55 Recently, long ranged order has been found for ionic liquid films and in confinement. 61,62 Here, we present a study of the 1-methyl-3-docosylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethlysulfonyl)imide ([C 22 C 1 im] + [NTf 2 ] À , Fig. 1) surface.…”

“…It should be mentioned that the PLZT also serves as the GFET back gate that has a high gating efficiency due to a large dielectric constant in exceeding 1000. On the other hand, bis‐(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)‐imide (TFSI) anions in the ionic liquid of 1‐butyl‐1‐methylpyrrolidinium bis‐(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)‐imide (BMP‐TFSI) have been found to form a self‐organized layer at the interface between graphene and ionic liquid, resulting in strong p‐doping to graphene . Through a combination of the n‐doping by the surface electric dipoles on oxide PLZT and p‐doping by self‐assembled TFSI anions, a network of p–n junctions can be generated on the GFET channel in a remarkably robust way.…”

“…Exceptionally extensive surface-induced structures with a thickness up to 2 µm were recently demonstrated for a number of imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ILs by Anaredy and Shaw. 15 Much less attention has been paid to the structure and dynamics of ILs, which can be formed in a micrometer-scale confinement.…”
