Long‐range lightning geolocation using a VLF radio atmospheric waveform bank

Abstract: [1] Lightning discharges generate broadband electromagnetic pulses with a peak component in the very low frequency (VLF; 3-30 kHz) range. VLF waves propagate through the Earth-ionosphere waveguide with relatively low attenuation, enabling the detection of these radio atmospherics at great distances from the lightning discharge. A new technique of long-range (≤6000 km) global lightning geolocation via sferic detection is presented. This new technique catalogs the dominant variation in expected received waveform… Show more

“…The minimum detection threshold is roughly 5-7 kA, a level at which intracloud strokes can be detected. Comparisons with NLDN data, however, show that LLSs predominantly sample CG flashes (roughly 80%) [Pessi et al, 2009;Said et al, 2010Said et al, , 2013.…”

“…In early May 2011 and again in November 2011, Vaisala implemented improved reprocessing algorithms that, coupled with the growing network and improved site calibration, dramatically increased DE and LA across all domains [Said et al, 2010]. DE was generally greater than 50% across the northern hemisphere at the start of 2011 and the region surrounding the Hawaiian Islands was the only area of deficiency across the northern hemisphere.…”

“…Although they are the best methods for retrieving robust information of a networks' performance, they are quite labor intensive when used to acquire a large enough dataset for a statistically reliable output. Other methods exist, such as the intercomparison of different LLSs within regions of overlapping coverage (Said et al, 2010;Pohjola and Mäkelä, 2013;Poelman et al, 2013b). However, the main disadvantage of those studies is the assumption that one network is the ground truth.…”
