This study aims to determine the amount of potential renewable energy sources of hydroelectric power plants that have been used to meet the electrical energy needs in East Kalimantan at this time, the amount of potential renewable energy sources of hydroelectric power plants that have not been used for electrical energy needs in East Kalimantan at this time, and the planning of electrical energy to provide electrical energy in the province of East Kalimantan in order to In this study, energy supply and demand in the province of East Kalimantan were analyzed using LEAP (Long-range Energy Alternative Planning system) models. The linear regression methodology used to project energy demand interpolates historical data, activity, and energy intensity. According to the study's findings, just 1,509 MW of the province of East Kalimantan's potential hydropower sources—6976.14 MW—have been used up to this point. In 2025, the population is expected to rise by 6,167,359 people, increasing the demand for electricity from 17,546,970 MWh to 20,643,495 MWh. According to the national energy management's blueprint for the goal composition of the energy mix, hydropower capacity in 2025 would have been 23,961,414 MWh or 55.56% of the overall producing capacity of 43,129,583 MWh.

There is no doubt that the transition towards renewable energies is generating many changes on different continents, some with greater impacts than others, but the development that has occurred is recognized and widely accepted. The progress has been significant but it is necessary to analyze the roadmaps that have been proposed so far at the island level so that decision makers have sufficient tools to commit the much-needed economic resources to transform their energy systems into 100% renewable ones. These approaches are not simple and the hard work of the authors who have disseminated their research is recognized. The roadmaps are planned based on the energy potential available in the territories and the future energy demand. Within countries, it is important to increase the economic resources to allocate to investments in environmentally friendly renewable energies. In this review of 100% renewable smart systems on islands, the situation of the American continent, its challenges and its long-term approaches in the different geographical areas facing 2050 are analyzed. This article shows that research into the design of 100% renewable energy systems in scientific articles is fairly new but has gained more and more attention in recent years. In total, 175 articles published since 2002 were identified and analyzed. Many of these articles have a predominant focus on the electricity sector. As a general result, it has been determined that although there has been significant progress towards an orderly energy transition, this has not been consistent with the international agreements signed since the Paris Summit, which is a real challenge in complying with the new commitment of the COP28 of Dubai in tripling the participation of renewables.

The Caribbean and Puerto Rico are lagging in ramping renewable energy (RE) capacities. Energy system transition pathways reaching 100% RE by 2050 for Puerto Rico and the Caribbean are analyzed for all energy supplies. Islands are often limited in available land; therefore, scenario variations are considered, including offshore floating photovoltaics (PV). The results for Puerto Rico clearly indicate the enormous benefits of reaching 100% RE, as the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) can be reduced from more than 100 €/MWh in 2020 to 47.4 €/MWh in 2050, and the levelized cost of energy, including all energy sectors, declines from 79 to 53 €/MWh, respectively. PV reaches 81% of all electricity supply, leading to 33.4 GW installed capacity, thereof 17.5 GW offshore floating PV due to area limitation. Without area limitation, the total system cost would be about 2.7% lower. The key metrics for the Caribbean development from 2020 to 2050 are as follows: electricity generation from 110 to 677 TWh, PV supply share from 2% to 92%, PV capacity from 1 to 332 GW, thereof 19% prosumer, 81% utility-scale with up to 38% offshore floating PV, and LCOE from above 100 to 31.9 €/MWh. The prosperity of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean is closely related to solar PV, the dominating source of energy in their Solar-to-X Economy.
