Long-pulsed Nd: YAG laser and intense pulse light-755 nm for idiopathic facial hirsutism: A comparative study

Abstract: Background:Hirsutism means excessive terminal hair growth in a female in male pattern distribution. Perception of hirsutism is subjective. Permanent laser hair reduction is a slow process taking many sessions and tracking of improvement parameters is tedious. Hence, a lot of confusion still exists regarding the type of laser most beneficial for treatment.Aim:The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness and safety profile of long-pulsed Nd: YAG laser (1064 nm) and intense pulse light (IPL)-755 nm in m… Show more

“…Long‐pulse Nd:YAG laser has been generally been found to be effective and safe in Indian skin type. However, complications like blistering, postinflammatory hyperpigmentation/hypopigmentation, and perifollicular edema and erythema, though rare, have been reported in skin type IV and V . Our study shows that a new pulse width (with 0.6‐1.6 ms), short‐pulse width Nd Yag laser is also safe and effective in causing hair reduction.…”

“…Similar age incidence was observed by Neerja Puri 16 where thirty patients had hirsutism and 50% patients were between 21-30 years of age. In this study, at the end of 4 weeks, good hair reduction was noted in 52% patients, which is similar to the hair reduction obtained ofother studies 17,18 ; where after one month 50% patients showed good hair reduction. In this study at the end of 8 weeks, excellent hair reduction was noted in 32% and good in 54% patients and at 12 weeks, excellent hair reduction was noted in 62% and good 30% patients.…”

“…At 6 th month, after four monthly laser sessions excellent hair reduction was noted in 12 patients (30%) and good hair reduction seen in 16 patients (40%). Similar incidence was noted in a study by Shrimal and Sardar, 11 where with monthly session of long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser, patients showed an average hair reduction of 84.67% after four sessions.…”

“…Excellent: >75% reduction; good: 50-75% reduction; fair: 25-50% reduction and poor: <25% reduction in hair density. Similar grading was used by Neerja Puri 8 and Shrimal et al 11 In our study, at the end of 4 weeks, good hair reduction (50-75%) was noted in 28 patients (70%). Similar hair reduction was obtained in the study by Noor 12 where after one month a mean hair reduction of 68 to 75% was obtained.…”
