Long hours of work in the U.S.: Associations with demographic and organizational characteristics, psychosocial working conditions, and health

Abstract: Overtime workers differ from their part-time and full-time counterparts in several important areas. Some of these differences tended to increase with the number of overtime hours worked, suggesting a linear relationship. However, caution is warranted before generalizing the results of this study to specific occupations or workplaces.

Variables such as irregular work hours/ sleep schedules, job stress, workplace absenteeism, and reduced productivity also contribute (16)(17)(18)(19).Although the related literature is growing, obesity in the occupational environment requires more study, for example, regarding low-wage workers and genes or other factors (20,21). Body mass index (BMI), a measure of obesity, varies by population, race, gender, and socioeconomic class (22)(23)(24).…”

“…The detrimental impact of extreme overtime work has often been demonstrated, but the unfavorable impact of moderately long working hours on health and well-being has not been consistently shown (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6). Moderately long working hours and their impact on health have been related to family financial stress and the breadwinner role: in situations of family financial stress, breadwinners are likely to be forced to work long hours in order to increase the family income (7,8).…”

“…In Brazil, there are few studies that appraise the association between long professional and domestic work hours and the health aspects within the nursing profession (1,3,9) . In relation to the work provided by the nurses, it is important to consider the aspects related to the complexity of the assigned responsibilities of these professionals in the systematic organisation of the work, that requires concentration, alertness, quick action, quality in carrying out the tasks, both planned and unexpected, management of work shift, leadership and also supervision of the general nursing work, among other tasks (2,5) .…”
