“…A disadvantage of the real-time acoustic monitoring systems is that they are generally fixed at a specific location, so they are not suitable for exceptional animal sightings in unusual areas, such as the stay of a pod of killer whales (Orcinus orca) in the port of Genova Prà in December 2019 [38,39]. In this case, it is more efficient to use mobile systems that allow real-time measurements for a limited time (towed hydrophones and wave gliders) or those that do not allow real-time monitoring (bottom recorders).…”

“…This might indicate that both ours and the Icelandic catalogs contained sound types from pods having related matrilines. Since it is known that the analyzed pod originated in Iceland (Mrusczok et al, 2021), we would expect to find up to 11 sound types forming our pod repertoire in the Icelandic catalog. Ford (1991) observed that most calls in a pod repertoire can be heard during 10-20 min of vocal activity.…”

“…As this location is very unusual for orca presence—the previous observations date back to the 1980s—this represented a special opportunity for a long‐term passive acoustic recording of an isolated orca pod in natural conditions. The pod consisted of a total of four individuals that were recognized through photo identification (Mrusczok et al, 2021) and one calf. In particular, Riptide (SN113), an adult male, Aquamarin (SN116), a juvenile, Dropi (SN115), whose sex was not identified, and Zena (SN114), an adult female who lost her calf during data collection.…”

“…Epimeletic behavior of killer whales toward conspecifics has previously been documented on several occasions (Reggente et al 2016;Bearzi et al 2018;Shedd et al 2020). A female killer whale from the Icelandic population has previously been observed displaying epimeletic behavior toward her dying (and later dead) calf for five consecutive days, with the female carrying the killer whale calf on the rostrum (Mrusczok et al 2022). Epimeletic behavior of killer whales toward non-conspecifics has not been previously documented.…”
